Garage Door Cable Repair

Lift cables connect the bottom of the door to the cable drums and spring system. If a cable frays, jumps a drum or snaps, stop moving the door because the remaining hardware may be carrying an uneven load.

Signs this system needs attention

  • The door rises unevenly
  • A cable is hanging beside the track
  • Cable is tangled around a drum
  • The bottom corner lifts before the other side

What the repair involves

The technician secures the door, checks the drums and bottom fixtures, replaces damaged cable where appropriate, restores equal cable tension and verifies that the door tracks evenly.

Lift cables connect the spring system to the bottom of the door. Wear often appears near the bottom bracket, where moisture can promote corrosion, or near the drum, where a cable that is not tracking correctly can fray against an edge.

A damaged cable can be the result of another fault rather than an isolated failure. Uneven spring tension, a cable that has left its drum, damaged travel hardware or a door that is no longer square can all load one side more heavily.

Both cables are inspected because they carry the same door and work through the same cycles. The door must be secured before cable tension or bottom hardware is touched.

Safety first

Do not remove a bottom bracket or cable while the spring system is under tension. The bottom fixtures are load-bearing parts.

Garage Door Cable Repair FAQ

Sometimes, but only after the cause is found. A cable can jump because of an obstruction, a failed spring, uneven tension, damaged track or worn hardware.

One side may have lost cable tension or come off its drum. Operating a crooked door can bend tracks, rollers or panels.

Yes. Fraying means strands have already failed. Stop using the door and arrange an inspection before the cable separates completely.

Look for broken strands, a fuzzy or frayed section, rust near the bottom bracket, or cable stacking unevenly on the drum. A door that begins lifting one side first also needs inspection before it is operated again.
