A broken spring removes the counterbalance that controls the door's weight. Even if the door is open, it should not be forced closed without evaluating how it is supported and whether the cables remain seated.
An open door may not be safely supported
The opener rail is not intended to hold the full dead weight of an unbalanced door. A broken spring can also leave cable tension uneven, especially if the door moved after the failure.
Do not stand in the travel path
Keep people, pets and vehicles clear. Do not release the opener, remove hardware or pull on a crooked door. Sudden downward movement can occur when support changes.
Report the exact position
Tell the repair provider whether the door is fully open, partly open or closed, whether it is level, and whether any cable is loose. Photos of the complete door and spring assembly are important.
Securing the property comes after stabilizing the door
A stuck-open door is a security concern, but forcing an unstable door can create a greater safety problem. The system should be stabilized before controlled movement is considered.
